Using Herbs In Your Coop

Image
Let's get this straight...I cannot grow plants.  Not well at least.  Send me a sick animal, I can usually help it.  Plants are a completely different subject with me.  I didn't get the green thumb like my cousin Gabbie or Aunt Tessa. However, I have been dabbling in herbs for the last couple of years. Primarily because I absolutely love the smell of lavender.  And also just to see if I could actually grow something. I did well with mint and lavender and decided to try growing herbs that would be beneficial to my chickens. Here are the herbs I plant and use and also a few herbs and other food items I buy because I haven't tried my hand at growing them or making them yet.  I will also in my list of things I do not feed my chickens.  And that of course is personal preference due to things I have read over the years.  ***DISCLAIMER: Remember I am not a vet or poultry scientist.  These are just the things that I have learned along my chicken journey.  This is all just for inform

May Reads....Getting Back Into The Reading Groove

Image
As some of you may have read in my previous blog, it's been a pretty rough last couple of months.  I haven't really felt like reading.  I didn't even get started back into reading until about the middle of May.  And thankfully, I think I have finally hit my reading stride again.  I am 52% through my 2024 reading challenge of 75 books.  So, very slightly ahead of schedule.  I have started June strong though.    My niece and I made a trip to Half Price Books in Independence on Memorial Day weekend and then Lloyd and I made a trip to the Westport Half Price books the next weekend.  Thanks to my good friend Lavena for telling me about them.  My wallet doesn't thank you but my bookshelf and TBR definitely does.  And if there is anything that is good for my mental health, it is reading and of course shopping for books! RAISING GEESE: A Beginner's Guide To Raising Happy and Healthy Geese  4/5 Like I said in my previous blog post, we have added goslings to our little farm

Mental Health Awareness Month

Image
I know I don't have many followers yet on this blog.  Those that do, I really appreciate you!  As do the chickens, ducklings, and now GOSLINGS!  Yes, we added two goslings near the end of March and BOTH fell in love with the gosling life so much we brought three more home last week.  However this blog post isn't about them.  Ya'll know I will have a huge blog post on those cuties soon.   Those that do read my blogs, I sincerely apologize for being absent the last month and a half/two months.  I promise it wasn't from laziness.  I do enjoy creating these blogs.  Of course I do....it means I get to talk about my favorite subjects- my chickens, my ducks, and reading.  This blog post isn't going to be as much fun but it will be informative. May is Mental Health Awareness Month.  And I am going to be open.  Probably more open than I should be.  But I want people to know that they aren't alone.  I suffer and have suffered from mental health issues since I was in my ea

APRIL READS....Just a little late.

Image
April was a pretty rough month for me.  More on that later.  However I did get 6 books in.  My favorite was definitely one I stumbled upon on FB 'Nine Month Contract' by Amy Daws.  Very cute.   I also found 'Love & Chickens' recommended on one of the many chicken FB pages I am on.  It was very cute, well written, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.   May is not starting very well book wise but I know I will catch up and hit that reading goal for the year.  One day at a time!   Happy Reading!   Jaymie

Oh the March slump. I didn't get as many books read as I would have liked to. Between my 40th Birthday festivities, the nice weather and spending time outside with my feathered babies, and honestly just a plain old reading slump due to some mild depression (who knew it would be so hard to turn 40?!?!?)- I was on the low side of book numbers. However I am still doing good with my reading goal which is set at 75 for the year. I just hit 25 yesterday and started 26 last night.  The Idea Of You by Robinne Lea 4.5/5 Stars 3/5 Spice I have had this book on my kindle to be read for a long time.  However, it just seemed weird to read about a 39 year old woman having a love affair with a much younger man.  That was until I saw the trailer for the movie based off this book that will be hitting Amazon Prime in May starring Anne Hathaway and the super cute kid from Purple Hearts.  I immediately started this book and was drawn into it.  It is nice to read about someone my age for once.  Usual

February 2024 Reads The Exception To The Rule by Christina Lauren Review- 3.5/5 Stars Spice Level 0/5 Cute novella. I sometimes struggle with Christina Lauren’s writing but since this one was short and sweet I had no issues with it.  Worst Wingman Ever by Abby Jimenez Review- 4/5 Spice Level- 0/5 This was a super fun, quick read. I have tried to read Abby’s work before and I am not a big fan. In fact, she was the only book I DNF last year. However, I am the minority of thinkers on that.  Rosie And The Dreamboat by Sally Thorne Review- 5/5 Spice Level- 0/5 Ok…two things: 1-I actually listened to this one on audio and laughed my butt off. 2- The Hating Game is one of my favorite movies. I even own the book (by Sally Thorne) but haven’t read it yet. This novella was adorable. I am adding The Hating Game to my TBR because if it’s as cute and funny as this was, it will be worth it! Drop, Cover, And Hold On by Jasmine Guillory Review- 3/5 Spice Level- 0/5 Just so so. Honestly a pretty forget

Happy 1st Birthday Duck Nuggets!

Image
I am very late in posting this.  I spent a week at home with Covid, not being able to celebrate the 1st birthday of my smelly Duck Nugget trio. We also added 8 chicks to the garage brooder.  Life has been a little busy and crazy.   I cannot believe it has been one year since I became a duck momma!  And what a fun, hilarious, smelly, crazy, wet, interesting, informative year it has been.  Ducks and chickens are like night and day.  Totally different animals.  But I have enjoyed every minute with them! After spending some time with the Canadian Goose who took refuge on our farm for a month or so in Winter of 2022, I knew my next adventure had to be waterfowl.  I would drop hints to my hubby here and there hoping it would finally just turn in to a yes. Well one day while joking through text, he finally said 'whatever' so I took that as a yes and ran with it. I promised Lloyd if I could get ducklings, I wouldn't buy any chicks at all in 2023 (and yes I held up on that promise).
